William M. Mandel was born in New York City on June 4, 1917. He briefly attended Moscow University and the City College of
New York. His first book, "The Soviet Far East and Central Asia," was published in 1944. He is a journalist, teacher, lecturer,
and author. He was a frequent witness before Cold War-era government committees which were hostile to his sympathetic view
of the Soviet Union, and he was blacklisted as a result. Beginning in 1958 he broadcast programs on KPFA and other Pacifica
stations. He taught at U.C. Berkeley, San Francisco State University, San Jose State University, and Golden Gate University
Law School. His autobiography, "Saying No to Power: Autobiography of a 20th Century Activist and Thinker," was published in
1999.
